A "Late Thursday Program" 5 -9 pm
Lecture 5:30-6:30 pm
Featured Speaker: Dr. Gabrielle Tayac
Dr. Tayac explores the history of Mid-Atlantic Native communities, with special regard for material culture, racial and cultural intermixing, and particularly the conundrum of presence/absence. How do we understand who the people of this region have been, and where and why their populations have changed over time? Where do we see Native presence in this region today, and how do we understand the relative absence of their historical (and contemporary) creativity in museum collections such as the Newark Museum?
Gabrielle Tayac, Ph.D. works with the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI). After serving as a Director of Education and as a Curator of various exhibitions, Dr. Tayac is now a Historian with NMAI. She has also published a number of important articles on indigenous issues.
